In one of the shock results of the day Fermanagh beat All Ireland champions Tyrone by the slimmest of margins in tough and testing conditions at Brewster Park. From the outset Fermanagh paid little heed to the calibre of their oppositions.

It was tit-for-tat in the opening minutes, with neither side gaining any significant advantage. It was to stay this way for the entire game, at least on the scoreboard. However, in terms of play it was Fermanagh who made all the running, outclassing their opponents all over the field.

A towering display by man of the match Barry Owens at full back saw him stifle the challenge of footballer of the year Stephen O'Neill who struggled to establish any sort of attacking rhythm.

The Fermanagh forwards by contrast looked to have more space, although they hindered their own progress dropping in short balls when they could have been notching up points.

All over the part Tyrone looked far from impressive with Martin Penrose wasting a clear cut goal opportunity, blasting over the bar from close range when he was one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

However they did manage to keep things tighter on the scoreboard and went in at half time two points to the good.

In the second half Fermanagh were without Fergal Riley who picked up an injury, however Mark Little did come on and made an immediate impact tormenting Tyrone as Fermanagh turned the two point deficit into a two point lead with ten minutes to go.

Tyrone threw everything at them with Sean Kavanagh pointing to reduce the deficit to one, but that was to be as far as they got as Fermanagh stubbornly held on for a shock victory that leaves Tyrone naught for two for their opening two NFL encounters.
